Longfellow Middle School Annual Winter Band Concert: Students Perform Season Favorites With Flair

Longfellow Middle School of Norman, Oklahoma, presented its annual Winter Band Concert on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, in the Longfellow Middle School Auditorium. Under the direction of Roger Nunn, Coordinator of Bands for Norman Public Schools, the 6th Grade Band and the combined 7th and 8th Grade Bands performed a variety of classical and Christmas favorites.

Mr. Nunn has been filling in for Longfellow’s Band Director, Dr. Martha Griffin, who was called away for a family emergency.

Mr. Nunn praised Longfellow staff and students alike for their dedication and commitment during an unusually stressful time, and he commended the band students for performing with only one combined rehearsal before the concert. “For them to play all together in one rehearsal, that’s a big thing,” stated Mr. Nunn.

Michael Donovan Platt II, a 7th grade saxophonist, played with the combined 7th and 8th grade band. This year’s Winter Concert marked Michael’s fourth concert performance with a Longfellow band, and he described his December 17th performance as “cautious.” Michael stated, “I was more nervous this time. I need new reeds, so I didn’t play that well.”

Anne Swift, a representative for the Norman Instrumental Parents Association (NIMPA), urged parents to join the Association. Ms. Swift explained how NIMPA funds allow band directors to purchase new music and supplies and repair instruments, as well as fund clinicians to work with students.

The NIMPA general fund supports the Norman All-City concerts. The All-City Orchestra Concert is an annual spring event held at Lloyd Noble Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.NIMPA raises money through membership fees as well as by selling advertisements in the All-City Program. All donations to NIMPA are tax-deductible.
